Talkin' Theatre - Is Paraphrasing OK?

First of all, there is a huge difference between Paraphrasing, Adaptation and Localising. Full adaptations done by appropriate artist, I LOVE. Localisation is sometimes a necessary evil, but Paraphrasing!!!!! It's generally an actor trying to make the words easier for themselves, which is NOT character.

Good writers write their characters with a distinct voice. Its the director and actors job to find that voice with the words given to them. Don' be a lazy actor......find the REASON a writer has used particular words or phrases.

Also there is the misconception that paraphrasing is 'naturalism'. No, No, NO. Find the naturalism of the character, not the naturalism of you for comforts sake.

This is difficult sometimes when a production gives you your script 10 seconds before shooting. But remember, those productions are not interested in good text so bare with them and do your job as best as possible. The contradiction to this is of course Mike Leigh, but he and his actors spend MONTHS finding the characters voice.
